Playwright

GRISELDA GAMBARO

Who is she?

Born on 28 July 1928 in Buenos Aires, Argentina

What about her?

Did not get a proper education, but taught herself through reading literature she found at her library.
Started writing at age 24, but didn’t start getting recognized for her writing until she was in her mid-thirties.
In the 1960s she got into involved with the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella which involved psychological aspects with those in fine arts. It is a non-profit organization that emphasizes Argentinian culture with fine arts. However, it was shut down in 1971 because of the political climate.

What did she write about/Why did she write?

Politics plays a huge role in what Gambaro writes about as her whole life revolves around it. She was exiled in 1977 because her novel Conquering Death was banished. She then continued to write about politics when she was in Barcelona (where she was exiled to)
Many of her themes are concerned with the abuse of authority in human relationships. Her writing is meant to evoke a sense of discomfort.
Writing is very intense and a different kind of black comedy. It always involves the audience in some way. Whether they’re on stage like they are in this play, or being directly accused of something, they’re always on stage
Her writing always includes European traditions, such as the absurd and Theatre of Cruelty but her writing has an Argentine identity which derives from the Argentine political reality with which she is so familiar.
